How to Have an Effective Short Term Mission Trip: Cómo Hacer una Misión a Corto Plazo Eficaz y Efect
A team of twenty people arrives at the airport at 4 PM to begin their short-term mission adventure. They don’t speak the language and have never left their home country. They are tired and a bit surprised at the soldiers armed with machine guns guarding the airport. However they come out of immigration with happy faces and bright t-shirts proclaiming “Jesus loves you!” In a short while they leave in a yellow school bus to travel about 100 kilometers up the mountain to a small Indigenous village with great needs. The Missionary hosts have met them at the Airport in the heat of the day. They welcome them bottles of cold water and huge smiles. What needs to be done to make sure the next 10 days of ministry are a success?
What happens before the team arrives is just as important as what happens after. It is the responsibility of those who receive the group, those who send them, and the group members themselves to be prepared and walk in humility, love and unity with each other. Here are a few keys:
1. Pray to the Lord to have His heart for the nation. Pray for God’s strategy for His People working in this place. Missions is about God, so avoid being self-focused as a group and your own experience. This is a time to follow Jesus as in Matthew 16:24 “Then Jesus said to His disciples: If anyone would come after me, deny yourself, take up your cross and follow Me.” Don’t just Do something, Stand there. It is important to see the people, feel what they are going through and seek the compassion of Christ. Pray without ceasing.
2. Communicate and communicate often. It is important to share things regarding logistics, details about those coming, who, how many, and arrival and departure times. It is important to know the costs of housing, food and transportation and extra things that might be needed. Don’t leave burdens on the missionaries and Pastors. Have a realistic budget that includes all of the expenses and make sure you are in agreement before you arrive.
3. Study the history, people, some of the language and the needs of the country. Know who is their president, how is their economy, education system and the situation of the local church and ministry. The team who receives the mission group could help in providing material before the group arrives. Please be sure that everyone has read up and knows something about the field where they will be ministering. Be familiar with the church, mission or ministry receiving you. What is their vision, their projects, and their history? This will help you unite with them and their ongoing ministry.
4. Prepare your mission according to the gifts of your team, the situation of the places you will be working and what the Lord has spoken to you in prayer. It is good to meet together several times to pray, practice dramas, divide responsibilities, and receive some teaching and general instructions to prepare you for the mission. We also recommend some books on missions and worldview. Is that Really You God? By Loren Cunningham and Discipling Nations by Darrow Miller are excellent. Know the rules to keep healthy, safe and to take care of yourself.
5. Keep Unity. Seek to befriend and raise the arms of those who are laboring full time in the mission field. Those who receive the group should also seek to minister, help and encourage the group. Don’t allow the enemy to be the accuser of the brothers. Loving communication is a protection against misunderstandings. Ephesians 4:1-3
6. Be a blessing. We aren’t automatically a blessing just by stepping off the plane. We need to seek God and have an encounter with His heart for the people where we are going to work. However, our coming as a foreigner demonstrates the value of our message. Know the message of the cross. Have literature, Bibles and creative ways to share the love of God. Even if you are doing a construction project, clinics, or other practical ministry, your life and your relationships as a team can shine the love of Jesus.
7. Love. Above all, love the people where God has sent you. When we leave a place, the greatest impact we leave behind in the lives of the people is how much we loved them.
The group returns to the airport with lots of stories. They prayed for a lady in the hospital who was dying and she received Christ and the Lord healed her! They gave away 500 Bibles to homes with tracts, prayers and words of encouragement. They repaired the preschool at the mission where 40 poor kids are taught. They bought a generator for the mission to help with the many blackouts. They showered with cold water, ate a lot of different foods, but they all stayed healthy. The missionaries are super happy and they added 20 new converts to their Bible Studies. The local church grew through the nights of dramas and evangelism. The group matured, they were challenged with the sacrifice of the missionaries and pastors and have committed to pray and support their work. The same for the group, those ministered to, and the missionaries and pastors, all are changed for eternity. But most important is that they have blessed the heart of the Father.
Son las 4 de la tarde y llega un equipo de 20 personas al campo misionero. No hablan el idioma y nunca han salido de su país de origen. Ellos llegan cansados y asustados por los soldados armados con ametralladoras en el aeropuerto. Sin embargo, salen con sonrisas y camisetas brillantes con el logo de su Iglesia y un mensaje proclamando “¡Jesucristo te ama!” Dentro de poco van a salir en un bus escolar aquillado y viajar unos 100 kilómetros arriba de una montaña para trabajar en un pueblo indígena con grandes necesidades. Los misioneros anfitriones vienen a recogerles en el calor de la tarde. Ellos traían botellas de agua fría y les saludan con una gran sonrisa y un anuncio grande de bienvenida. ¿Cómo le hacen para que sus 10 días de ministerio sean un éxito?
Lo que pasa antes de llegar es tan importante como lo que pasa durante y después que llega su equipo. Es la responsabilidad de los que reciben un grupo, los que lo envían y los que son parte del grupo estar preparados y caminar en amor y unidad, unos con los otros.
1. Orar al Señor para tener Su corazón para esta nación. Orar por la estrategia de Dios y por Su Pueblo obrando en este lugar. Misiones es acerca de Dios, así, se evita que sean auto-enfocados como grupo y su experiencia. Este es un tiempo de seguir a Jesús como en Mateo 16:24 ¨Entonces Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: Si alguno quiere venir en pos de mí, niéguese a sí mismo, tome su cruz y sígame.¨ No solamente hacer algo, párate allí. Se necesita ver a la gente, sentir lo que ellos están pasando y tener la compasión de Cristo. Orar sin cesar.
2. Comunicar y comunicar mucho. Necesitan saber muchas cosas logísticas detalles sobre quiénes, cuántos, cuándo y cómo van a llegar. Es importante que sepan los costos de estadía, comida, transporte y cosas extras que van a necesitar. No dejar con cargas a los misioneros y pastores. Tener un presupuesto real que incluya todos los gastos y en el que todos estén de acuerdo antes de llegar.
3. Estudiar la historia, pueblo, algo del idioma, y necesidades del país. Conocer quién es el presidente, como es su economía, sistema educativo y la situación de la Iglesia local. El equipo que recibe la misión puedan ayudar en tener material preparado para enviar al grupo antes de su llegada. Favor de asegurar que todos lo han leído y saben algo del campo a donde van. Conocer algo de la Iglesia, misión o ministerio que les está recibiendo. ¿Cuál es su visión, sus proyectos y su historia? Este les ayuda para unirse con ellos en el ministerio.
4. Preparar su misión de acuerdo a los dones de su grupo, la situación del campo donde van a trabajar y lo que Dios les ha dado en la oración. Deben reunirse varias veces para orar, practicar dramas, dividir responsabilidades, y recibir algo de preparación sobre misiones. Recomiendo que lean libros sobre misiones o cosmovisión. ¿Eres tu Señor? por Loren Cunningham o Discipulando Naciones por Darrow Miller son excelentes. Conocer las reglas de salud, seguridad, y cuidarse.
5. Manténganse unidos. Buscar hacer amistad y cómo ayudar a levantar los brazos de los que están laborando tiempo completo en el lugar. Los que reciben el grupo, deben buscar como ministrar, ayudar y animar al grupo. No dejar que el enemigo sea el acusador de los hermanos. La comunicación amorosa es una protección en contra de malentendidos. Ef. 4:1-3
6. Sean una bendición. No somos una bendición solamente al bajar el avión. Necesitamos buscar de Dios y tener un encuentro con Su corazón para el pueblo donde vamos a trabajar. El llegar como extranjeros a un lugar, esto demuestra el valor de tu mensaje. Conoce el mensaje de la cruz. Tengan literatura, Biblias y maneras creativas para compartir el amor de Dios. Aun si estás haciendo un proyecto de construcción, clínicas, u otros ministerios prácticos, tu vida y tus relaciones como equipo puedan hacer brillar el amor de Dios.
7. AMAR. Sobre todo, amar a la gente donde Dios les ha mandado. Cuando salimos de un lugar, la huella más grande que dejamos en sus vidas es nuestro amor por ellos.
El grupo regresa al aeropuerto con muchas historias. Oraron por una señora muriendo en un hospital, y ella recibió a Cristo, y Dios lo sano. Regalaron 500 Biblias a hogares con folletos, oración y palabras de ánimo. Arreglaron el salón de pre-escolar de la misión donde enseñan 40 niños pobres. Compraron la misión un generador de electricidad por tantos apagones que tienen. Se bañaron con agua fría, comieron muchas comidas diferentes, pero se mantuvieron sanos todos. Los misioneros están súper contentos, ya que añadieron 20 nuevos convertidos a sus estudios Bíblicos. La Iglesia creció con los que asistieron a las noches de dramas y evangelismo. El grupo ha madurado, han sido retados por el sacrificio de los misioneros y pastores y se han comprometido a orar y apoyar su obra. Igual por el grupo, el campo y la misión, todos son cambiados para la eternidad. Pero aun más importante es que han bendecido el corazón del Padre.
